How to Keep a Transparent Background When Converting an Image
A transparent background is not the same as a white background. Transparency is stored as alpha information, and not every image format supports it. A conversion can therefore change the appearance even when the foreground object seems unchanged.
Check the source before converting
Open the original over both a light and a dark background if possible. If the background is already white in the source pixels, conversion cannot restore transparency that was never present.
Choose a format that supports transparency
PNG and WebP can preserve transparency. JPG does not support an alpha channel, so a transparent area must be filled with a solid color when exporting to JPG. If a destination requires JPG, choose the background color intentionally before export.
Inspect edges
Logos, icons and cut-out product photos can show light or dark halos around the edges after conversion or resizing. Zoom in around fine hair, antialiased edges and semi-transparent shadows. A halo can come from the original image, a matte color, or the conversion settings.
Use the right background for JPG
If the target only accepts JPG, place the transparent asset on the intended background color before exporting. White is common for documents, but it is not always right for a colored webpage. The background becomes part of the JPG and cannot be removed later without further editing.
Keep an editable source
Keep the original transparent PNG or WebP as the master. Treat JPG as a flattened delivery version, not the only copy of the asset.
Quick decision guide
- File exceeds a KB/MB limit: compress the image; resize first if its dimensions are larger than needed.
- Pixel dimensions are wrong: resize or crop, then recheck file size.
- Format is rejected: convert to a format the destination explicitly supports.
- Visual quality changed: compare the output with the original and try a less aggressive setting.
